Reddit Citations Moved to Perplexity. A Lawsuit May Decide What Happens Next.

On August 14, 2026, ChatGPT's reliance on Reddit citations fell by 86.4%. Not gradually -- in a matter of days, following a structural change to ChatGPT's query fanout mechanism. It was not a reversible algorithmic tweak.

The citations did not disappear from AI search. They migrated.

Understanding where they went -- and the legal proceedings that could move them again -- matters for any business that has built Reddit presence as part of its AI visibility strategy, or is weighing whether to start.

ChatGPT Largely Stopped Citing Reddit

Our August 30, 2026 investigation into Reddit platform routing across AI engines documented what happened in detail. After the August 14 mechanism change, a spot test on August 23 found ChatGPT citing Reddit in 2 out of 100 responses. The pre-August baseline had been materially higher.

The change is structural, not cyclical. The fanout mechanism that generated Reddit citations was modified. What remained is a floor, not a dip in a trend.

Fix plans we write for clients no longer include Reddit as a ChatGPT signal. A business with strong, relevant Reddit community threads should not expect that presence to generate ChatGPT citations in the current environment -- regardless of how active or well-regarded those threads are.

Perplexity Absorbed the Majority of Reddit Citations

Pierview, which tracks AI citations across platforms, published data covering 44,488 Reddit citations between July 1 and August 19, 2026. The platform breakdown: Perplexity holds 71% of cross-platform Reddit citations. ChatGPT holds 23%.

In our August 23 spot test, Perplexity cited Reddit in 47 out of 100 responses -- roughly the same frequency it maintained before ChatGPT's collapse.

Google AI Mode, which formalized Reddit as an explicit citation surface in its May 6 "Expert Advice" and "Community Perspectives" update, came in at 50 out of 100 responses citing Reddit on the same date. That puts Google AI Mode at parity with Perplexity as a Reddit citation surface -- a fact that was previously documented structurally but is now confirmed at the response-frequency level.

The practical shift: if a business has Reddit presence that generates citations, those citations are now almost entirely through Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Our August 30 methodology update reflects this -- Reddit recommendations now route to the Perplexity and AI Mode sections of the fix plan. The ChatGPT section no longer includes Reddit.

A Federal Lawsuit Is Now in Discovery

Perplexity's Reddit citation rate works the way it does partly because Perplexity-User, its live-fetching crawler, accesses Reddit content directly. Perplexity-User ignores robots.txt. This is the mechanism Reddit sued over.

On July 31, 2026, U.S. District Judge Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York denied Perplexity's motion to dismiss. Reddit's DMCA anti-circumvention claims and civil conspiracy claim survived. The case is now in discovery.

Our August 31 analysis of the ruling identified two forward scenarios:

**Scenario 1 -- Settlement with licensing.** This is the path OpenAI and Google both followed: signed data licensing agreements with Reddit. If discovery costs escalate (which they do quickly in SDNY), a licensing settlement is the path of least resistance. Perplexity's Reddit access would become a paid, licensed feature rather than a contested live crawl. Citation rates would likely hold, possibly formalize.

**Scenario 2 -- Adverse ruling or injunction.** A ruling against Perplexity's live-fetching practice, or a specific injunction against Perplexity-User, would cut off the citation source. A platform currently cited at 47/100 could fall toward ChatGPT's post-August 14 level. Any business that positioned Reddit presence as a Perplexity lever would see that lever removed.

A third scenario -- protracted litigation with current practices unchanged -- is possible, but less probable as discovery proceeds.

The honest framing for any Perplexity Reddit recommendation right now is: this is a current-state finding. It is not a stable structural feature. Include the caveat when building strategy around it.

Who Should Act on This, and Who Shouldn't

The platform shift data creates a practical routing question for AI visibility strategy. Our August 30, 2026 investigation into Reddit routing specified guidance by client type:

**Local home services and trades:** Reddit is not a fix plan action. This was true before August 14, and the platform shift does not change it. A local HVAC company or plumber building Reddit community presence is running a 6-18 month community management project with no discrete completion state. For local contractor queries, directory presence -- Yelp, Foursquare, Angi, Thumbtack -- still dominates citation patterns across every platform. The fact that Perplexity now holds 71% of Reddit citations does not make Reddit a viable local SMB action item. The underlying infrastructure for local service citations is different.

**SaaS products, consumer brands, media companies:** If a Reddit footprint already exists -- brand mentions in relevant subreddits, category discussions, comparison threads -- that footprint is a Perplexity-specific asset right now. Route it to the Perplexity and AI Mode sections of the fix plan. Do not build ChatGPT expectations around it. Include the durability caveat: the legal proceedings could alter the picture within the next 12 months.

**B2B companies with niche subreddits:** r/devops, r/homelab, r/legaladvice, r/sysadmin -- these communities surface organically in Perplexity responses for relevant queries. If a business appears in these threads, it has a measurable Perplexity edge today. Same durability caveat applies.

What this is not: a reason to build new Reddit presence speculatively. The Perplexity advantage requires a footprint that already exists and is being cited. Building that footprint from scratch, under active litigation uncertainty, on a platform that requires 6-12 months of organic community participation before it becomes citable, is not a sensible short-term AI visibility action.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For businesses already tracking their AI visibility: the platform breakdown on your citation data matters more than it did six months ago. Being cited on Perplexity today, through Reddit or otherwise, reflects a different signal than being cited on ChatGPT -- and that distinction carries legal risk in its durability that a score alone doesn't convey.
