Reddit Still Works for AI Visibility — Just Not on ChatGPT Anymore

When ChatGPT's Reddit citations collapsed 86.4% on August 14, most coverage framed it as the end of Reddit as an AI visibility signal. That framing is wrong.

Reddit didn't stop working for AI citation. It migrated platforms.

What the Pierview Data Shows

In our August 30, 2026 methodology investigation of the August fanout shift, we analyzed 44,488 Reddit citations tracked by Pierview across major AI platforms from July 1 through August 19, 2026. The distribution after ChatGPT's August 14 behavior change:

- Perplexity: 71% of cross-platform Reddit citations - ChatGPT: 23%

Before August 14, both platforms were contributing to Reddit citation counts from roughly comparable positions. After ChatGPT's fanout mechanism change, Perplexity's Reddit citation share roughly doubled from July into early August, and the gap has held.

We validated this with an August 23 spot test: 100 queries across platforms, measuring which responses cited Reddit URLs.

- Perplexity: 47 out of 100 responses cited Reddit - ChatGPT: 2 out of 100 responses cited Reddit

The reversal in relative citation strength is nearly complete. If you're thinking about Reddit as an AI visibility lever in August 2026, it is a Perplexity play, not a ChatGPT play.

Google AI Mode Is Now Co-Primary

The August 23 spot test also surfaced a finding we hadn't previously quantified at response frequency: Google AI Mode cited Reddit in 50 out of 100 responses -- roughly comparable to Perplexity, and notably higher than ChatGPT.

This isn't surprising once you trace the mechanism. Google's May 6, 2026 AI Mode update introduced dedicated "Community Perspectives" and "Expert Advice" sections into AI Mode responses, with Reddit threads explicitly surfaced as a content type. That update created a structural slot for Reddit content in AI Mode. The August 23 data confirms it's being filled at scale.

Reddit presence now touches two AI platforms meaningfully: Perplexity and Google AI Mode. For businesses where community discussion exists organically, this is a different landscape than it was in early 2026 -- not a degraded one.

Who This Changes the Calculus For

Our August 30 methodology rec draws a clear line: the Reddit migration changes the advice for some businesses and changes nothing for others.

**SaaS, consumer products, and B2B brands with niche subreddits:** If Reddit communities already discuss your brand or category organically -- r/devops for infrastructure tools, r/homelab for hardware, r/personalfinance for a fintech product -- that existing presence is now a measurable Perplexity and AI Mode edge. The August 23 data makes this concrete: those citations are showing up in nearly half of responses on both platforms. If this describes your business, the framing for Reddit in any fix plan should route explicitly to Perplexity and AI Mode performance, not ChatGPT.

**Local home services and trades:** The exception holds. In our June 23, 2026 methodology rec analyzing this exact question, we documented the Q4 2025 local services citation hierarchy from Pierview data:

| Source | Citations (Q4 2025, ChatGPT + Perplexity) | |---|---| | Yelp | 512,680 | | BBB | 149,710 | | Angi | 145,633 | | Thumbtack | 56,004 | | HomeAdvisor | 33,582 | | Nextdoor | 10,308 | | Reddit | Not ranked |

Reddit doesn't appear in the top six for local contractor queries. A local HVAC company in a mid-size market is not being discussed in Reddit threads. There is no existing footprint to leverage, and building one organically requires a 6-18 month community management effort with no discrete completion state. The Reddit platform migration does not create a new fix-plan action for local trades clients.

The advice that looks contradictory on the surface -- "Reddit works for AI citations" and "don't add Reddit to your fix plan" -- are both true simultaneously for different client types.

The Durability Question

Perplexity's Reddit advantage is legally contested, and the picture changed materially after our initial analysis.

Reddit filed suit against Perplexity in October 2025, alleging unauthorized scraping (SDNY). Perplexity's Reddit citation rate dropped approximately 86% immediately after the lawsuit filing. Since then: Perplexity filed a motion to dismiss, which the court denied on July 31, 2026. Reddit's DMCA anti-circumvention claims and civil conspiracy claim survived and are now in discovery.

Two forward scenarios from our August 31 update to this methodology rec:

**Settlement with licensing** is the more probable path if discovery costs escalate. It would mirror the licensing deals Reddit has already signed with OpenAI and Google -- formally restoring and stabilizing Perplexity's Reddit access.

**Adverse ruling or injunction against Perplexity-User live-fetching** would likely collapse Perplexity's Reddit citation rate quickly, similar to the immediate drop after the lawsuit filing.

We include this not to discourage attention to Reddit presence -- a business's organic Reddit footprint has value beyond any single AI platform -- but because any recommendation that depends on Perplexity's current Reddit access should carry a durability caveat. The August 2026 numbers are real. Whether they persist through the litigation depends on a court in the Southern District of New York.

What to Actually Do With This

The first question for Reddit in any AI visibility audit is whether an organic footprint exists, not whether you should build one. There is no "add your business to Reddit" action -- presence is earned through authentic community participation over months, not claimed in an afternoon.

If the footprint exists and your business is in a category where Reddit communities are active: frame your Reddit exposure as a Perplexity and AI Mode edge, include the durability caveat, and route it to the right platform sections in your analysis.

If no Reddit footprint exists and you're in local trades: this analysis confirms what our June 2026 rec found. Your highest-leverage AI visibility infrastructure is still Foursquare, Yelp, and (for home services) Thumbtack. Those haven't changed.

Sourcepull's Signal Check shows your baseline cross-platform citation score -- including which sources are currently driving your visibility on Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and ChatGPT. If you want to know whether your Reddit presence is actually translating into AI citations, or whether you have a gap, that's where the measurement starts.
