Reddit Dominates ChatGPT Citations. Local Services Are the Exception.

After GPT-5.5 Instant launched as ChatGPT's default free model on May 23, 2026, one headline repeated everywhere: Reddit is now ChatGPT's top cited domain. The numbers are real. A SISTRIX analysis of 3.8 million German-language ChatGPT responses found 47% of all citations redistributed within 48 hours of the model switch. Reddit picked up the most, gaining +7,007 citations per 10,000 responses -- a 59% jump that pushed it to ChatGPT's most-cited domain by a 3x margin.

Business owners and marketers saw this and drew an obvious conclusion: Reddit presence must matter for AI visibility. For an HVAC company or plumber, that conclusion is wrong.

What the Reddit growth data actually measured

The two primary studies behind the Reddit-on-ChatGPT narrative cover specific query types that are not local service searches.

In our June 16, 2026 analysis (`methodology-recs/2026-06-16-gpt55-chatgpt-citation-shift.md`, Scout session 49), we examined the Writesonic study that produced the most-cited figures: 50 prompts, 16 categories, 11,469 web search results, 1,257 citations. Those prompts were broad and informational. Product comparisons. Explainer questions. Category research across Finance and Marketing and similar verticals.

The Tinuiti Q1 2026 AI Citations Trends Report, the second commonly cited source, tracked Reddit citation share growing 73% across nine commercial categories: apparel, beauty, electronics, food and beverage, home and garden, manufacturing, OTC health, technology, transportation and logistics.

Notice what those nine categories do not include: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, pest control, landscaping. The "home and garden" category in Tinuiti's data covers consumer products -- lawn equipment, home decor, DIY supplies. Not service trades.

Neither study tested local contractor recommendation queries: "best HVAC company in Dallas," "24-hour plumber near me," "emergency electrician Toronto." Applying the 73% Reddit growth figure to local contractor citation behavior is methodologically unsupported. The data measures Reddit's growth in a context that does not describe how homeowners search for local services.

What the actual local service citation hierarchy looks like

In our June 23, 2026 methodology investigation (`methodology-recs/2026-06-23-reddit-not-local-smb-fix-plan.md`, Scout session 56), we pulled Q4 2025 citation count data for local home services queries across ChatGPT and Perplexity combined. Source: `knowledge/directory-presence-impact.md` update of the same date.

The ranking:

| Source | Citations | |---|---| | Yelp | 512,680 | | BBB | 149,710 | | Angi | 145,633 | | Thumbtack | 56,004 | | HomeAdvisor | 33,582 | | Nextdoor | 10,308 | | Reddit | Not ranked |

Reddit does not appear in the top six sources for local home services queries. Yelp leads by a wide margin -- 512,680 citations against BBB's 149,710 -- and even Nextdoor, the most community-focused platform in the list, sits 50x below Yelp. The gap between structured service directories and community forums for local contractor queries is not close.

The practical implication of this data is direct: if a home services business is going to invest time in one platform for ChatGPT local presence, the Q4 2025 citation data says it is Yelp, not Reddit. A claimed, populated Yelp profile with 10+ reviews is what our June 23 rec calls "non-negotiable" for home services clients. Reddit is not on that list.

Perplexity pulled back from Reddit after a lawsuit

The Reddit growth narrative is complicated further for Perplexity specifically.

Reddit sued Perplexity for unauthorized scraping in October 2025 (SDNY). Perplexity's Reddit citation share dropped approximately 86% immediately after the lawsuit was filed. The case is still unresolved as of June 2026.

Our June 23 rec documents the current state: Perplexity's Bar 1 -- the first retrieval stage where sources are pulled before synthesis -- is now satisfied by directories and Google organic results, not Reddit. An empirical source URL analysis of 102 URLs across 12 Perplexity queries (Session 16) found zero Reddit URLs in Perplexity's source pool. For Perplexity's local service responses, the citation pool looks like the table above, not like the Reddit-dominated picture from broad informational query research.

Recommending Reddit presence as an AI visibility fix for Perplexity means betting on a legally contested access arrangement with an 86% historical disruption already in the data.

Reddit citation behavior on ChatGPT is model-driven, not stable infrastructure

Even setting aside the query-type distinction and the Perplexity lawsuit, there is a structural problem with Reddit as an AI visibility strategy for local businesses: the citation pattern is volatile in a way that businesses cannot influence.

Our June 23 investigation documents three directional shifts in ChatGPT's Reddit citation behavior over approximately eight months:

- Peak: Reddit accounted for roughly 60% of ChatGPT social citations - Drop: Reddit share collapsed to roughly 10% following a Google Search parameter change in late 2025 - Reversal: GPT-5.5 Instant reversed this; Reddit is now the top domain again as of May 2026

Three direction changes in eight months. Each shift was driven by OpenAI's model architecture decisions -- specifically, how aggressively GPT-5.5 Instant uses the `site:` operator when executing web searches (down from 40.5% of queries to 12.6% after the GPT-5.5 switch). A local HVAC contractor in Dallas cannot control whether OpenAI's next model update sends Reddit citations back up or down.

Building Reddit presence to chase this pattern is not infrastructure. It is an attempt to game a signal that moves based on factors entirely outside the business's control. The fix plan work that holds value across model updates -- Yelp listings, consistent NAP, directory presence across the sources that dominate Q4 2025 local citation data -- is not affected by how OpenAI configures its search operator behavior next quarter.

Why building Reddit presence doesn't work for local trades

There is also a practical problem. The fix plan work Sourcepull audits prescribe covers discrete, completable tasks: claim a directory listing, fix a NAP inconsistency, add schema markup, remove a robots.txt block that prevents AI crawlers from reading the site. These have clear completion states.

Reddit presence for a local contractor is not that kind of task. It means participating authentically in city subreddits over months, answering homeowner questions without appearing promotional, building a community reputation organically. There is no "add your business to Reddit" action. The timeline is 6-18 months. It cannot be scheduled into a 90-day fix plan.

For the contractor who asks whether they should start posting in r/Dallas or r/Toronto homeowner threads -- maybe, eventually, if they have the bandwidth and enjoy that kind of engagement. But it is not an AI visibility fix. It is a long-horizon community management play, and the Q4 2025 citation data shows that even if it works perfectly, it is competing with Yelp's 512,680 citations from a standing start with no path to scale.

Where the effort actually belongs

The June 23 rec closes with a clear directive on sequencing for home services clients.

Yelp is the non-negotiable starting point. The Q4 2025 data puts Yelp at 3.4x over BBB -- the next-ranked source -- and 50x over Nextdoor, the only community-oriented platform in the top six. If a contractor has one action to take for ChatGPT local citation presence, it is a fully claimed and populated Yelp profile with 10+ reviews.

After Yelp, the second and third positions (BBB and Angi) fill out the directory infrastructure that the Q4 2025 data shows AI platforms are actually retrieving from for home service queries. Thumbtack and HomeAdvisor round out the list before the citation counts drop significantly.

The Reddit growth story is accurate for the queries it measured. It is not accurate for local contractor recommendation queries. That distinction matters when a business owner is deciding where to spend 20 hours of implementation time on AI visibility.

Signal Check at sourcepull.ca runs per-platform citation queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude and shows where a business currently sits in the citation pool. For home service businesses, the platform-specific fix plan includes directory sequencing based on the citation data -- which sources drive citations on each platform, and which ones to prioritize given where the gaps are.
