Perplexity's Top Source Is Reddit. Why That Doesn't Apply to Local Businesses
Most articles about Perplexity visibility point to the same finding: Reddit is the platform's top cited domain, accounting for 20-24% of all Perplexity citations -- the highest single-domain share on any AI engine studied. The implication seems obvious. If you want your business appearing in Perplexity answers, Reddit presence matters.
That logic applies to a narrow set of businesses. If you're an HVAC company, a plumber, a roofing contractor, or any local service business, the Perplexity queries where you need to appear look nothing like the queries that produced the Reddit figure. Using this data to build a local visibility strategy produces recommendations with no relationship to how local service businesses actually get cited.
Where the Tinuiti data comes from
In our July 28, 2026 research session (Scout session 90), we added Tinuiti's January 2026 AI Citations Trends Report data to the Sourcepull research vault. The Reddit 20-24% figure is accurate for what Tinuiti measured: general commercial queries across broad categories -- electronics, apparel, food and beverage, technology, beauty, OTC health, and manufacturing.
None of Tinuiti's nine categories are local service trades. The study did not measure "best HVAC company in Phoenix." It did not measure "24-hour plumber near me" or "emergency roofer Toronto." Those are the queries that determine whether a local service business appears in Perplexity. The Tinuiti data, however accurate, is measuring a different search context entirely.
Tinuiti's 31% social media citation share for Perplexity (with Reddit as the dominant source within that) is also a general-query aggregate. For local service recommendation queries, the citation architecture is structurally different from what Reddit-heavy general queries produce.
How Perplexity handles local service queries
Perplexity operates as a real-time retrieval system. For each query, it fetches roughly 5-10 live pages from the web, selects 3-4 to cite, and synthesizes an answer. Unlike ChatGPT, it does not draw from a training data corpus -- it reads the live web at query time.
Scout's June 2026 methodology documentation (session 52) identified two clearance points every source must pass before Perplexity includes it in an answer.
**Bar 1 is source selection.** For your page to enter consideration, Perplexity must retrieve it during its live web search. For local service recommendation queries, this is primarily driven by Google organic ranking. Our research found that 60% of Perplexity citations overlap with Google's top-10 organic results for the same query. If your business does not rank organically for "[service] in [city]," Perplexity's retrieval will almost certainly not surface your site.
The other Bar 1 path: major directories that Perplexity directly indexes. Yelp appears in every industry category Perplexity has been tested against. For a local contractor with weak organic ranking, a populated Yelp profile is often the only route to Bar 1 access.
**Bar 2 is answer absorption.** Once Perplexity has retrieved your page or directory listing, it needs specific, extractable content: a direct answer to the query in the first sentence, named services and location, quantified evidence such as years in business and review count, and clear structure a language model can parse and quote.
Most local service businesses fail Bar 1 entirely and never reach Bar 2. Reddit is not part of this failure -- Reddit is not in the dependency chain for local service recommendation queries. No Reddit thread about "best plumber in Denver" appears in Google's top 10 organic results for that query. Perplexity's live retrieval follows Google's ranking, and for local service queries, Google's top 10 is directory listings, business websites, and category roundup content -- not Reddit threads.
What our audit source data confirms
In a May 2026 Perplexity source URL analysis from a live Sourcepull audit (Scout session 16), we captured 102 Perplexity source URLs across 12 query records. The business being audited was a B2B SaaS product rather than a home service company -- but the Reddit absence is instructive.
Reddit URLs across those 102 sources: zero. Not because Perplexity had deprioritized Reddit specifically, but because Reddit did not rank in the top organic results for the queries being tested. Perplexity's retrieval is Google-shaped. What ranks in Google is what Perplexity fetches.
For B-series local queries -- "best [category] in [city]" -- the source patterns our audits capture are directory listings, business websites, and category comparison pages. The October 2025 Reddit citation drop on Perplexity (roughly 86% reduction following litigation) partly explains the absence, but the deeper cause is simpler: local service recommendation queries do not surface Reddit threads in organic search. There is no Reddit thread to retrieve.
The Tinuiti January 2026 data and the Scout session 16 audit data are not in conflict. They measure different query types. Tinuiti measures general commercial queries where Reddit legitimately appears. Our audit data captures local service recommendation queries where Reddit does not appear because it is not in Google's organic top-10 for those searches.
The actual path to Perplexity citations for a local business
The citation hierarchy for a local service business on Perplexity is distinct from what drives citations in consumer product or technology verticals.
Google organic ranking for your category plus city terms is the highest-leverage input. With 60% Perplexity-Google citation overlap, ranking in Google's top 10 for "plumber in Chicago" or "HVAC repair Denver" is the most direct path to Perplexity retrieval. This is not a fast fix, but it is the root cause of most low Perplexity scores for local service businesses.
Directory presence with populated profiles is the near-term lever. Scout's June 2026 findings (session 52) make a specific distinction: a Yelp listing with zero reviews provides Bar 1 access but gives Perplexity nothing to quote in an answer. Bar 2 absorption requires review count and star rating data, specific service category tags, location information matching the query geography, and some response history showing the profile is active. Getting listed on Yelp is necessary but not sufficient -- the profile has to contain data Perplexity can extract and synthesize from.
A crawlable homepage with direct entity data is the third layer. Perplexity can and does cite business websites directly for local service queries. That citation only happens if Perplexity's crawler can access and read the page -- sites blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt, or rendering their service content in JavaScript that Perplexity cannot parse, will not be read regardless of content quality.
Reddit does not appear on this list.
How to read AI visibility research as a local business
Most published AEO research covers general commercial queries because those are easiest to study at scale. Generating 10,000 prompts about technology, beauty, and consumer products is methodologically straightforward. Measuring local contractor recommendation queries across hundreds of cities and dozens of trade categories requires a different dataset.
The Tinuiti Reddit figure is real. It accurately represents what Tinuiti measured. Applying it to an HVAC company's visibility strategy produces a recommendation with no connection to how that company actually gets cited. The research describes a different query context.
If you want to know where your business actually stands on Perplexity for the recommendation queries that matter to your category, run a Signal Check at sourcepull.ca. The score is built on query types specific to your business -- not general commercial query averages that describe a different segment of AI search.
