Perplexity Reddit Citations Have an October 16 Expiration Date
In August 2026, our research documented a platform split that most AEO analysis missed: while ChatGPT's Reddit citations collapsed 86.4% in a single week after its query-fanout mechanism changed, Perplexity went the other direction. Our August 23 spot test (Scout session 123) found Perplexity citing Reddit in 47 of 100 responses. A Pierview dataset covering 44,488 Reddit citations from July 1 through August 19, 2026 found Perplexity holding 71% of all tracked cross-platform Reddit citations -- ChatGPT held 23%.
That 47% figure is what most current Perplexity citation advice is built on. The problem is that it depends entirely on a single mechanism -- Perplexity-User, Perplexity's live-fetching crawler that explicitly ignores robots.txt -- and that mechanism is the specific target of a lawsuit whose next major deadline is October 16, 2026.
Three things changed in September and October that the August analysis did not capture. Understanding them is the difference between treating Reddit presence as a durable Perplexity investment and treating it as a conditional bet.
How the Case Escalated After August
The Reddit v. Perplexity case (SDNY, Case No. 25-cv-8736, Judge Paul A. Engelmayer) reached its first major milestone on July 31, 2026: the court denied Perplexity's motion to dismiss in a 63-page ruling, keeping Reddit's core DMCA anti-circumvention claims alive. The case moved into discovery.
In our September 9 investigation (Scout session 133), we documented why the DMCA theory survived: the court held that Google's SearchGuard -- its robots.txt enforcement infrastructure -- constitutes a "measure that controls access to copyrighted work" under DMCA §1201(a). That framing directly implicates Perplexity-User's deliberate robots.txt bypassing. This is the first SERP-scraping anti-circumvention theory to survive dismissal in a U.S. federal court. The implication is specific: if Reddit obtains an injunction, Perplexity-User's live Reddit retrieval -- the mechanism sustaining the 47% citation rate -- is the exact behavior the claim targets.
Discovery on the primary claims closes October 16.
Three Developments in September and October
**Perplexity switched law firms.** In mid-September, Perplexity dropped Keker, Van Nest & Peters and sought to retain Proskauer Rose as new counsel. Proskauer had previously represented Reddit -- a potential conflict of interest that Judge Engelmayer is still considering as of October 4 (Scout session 158). Firms don't change trial counsel mid-discovery on a whim. It's a signal of strategic reassessment, not resolution. The conflict question adds delay to a schedule that already has an October 16 close on primary discovery.
**SerpApi filed antitrust counterclaims.** SerpApi, the data intermediary named alongside Perplexity in Reddit's complaint, filed counterclaims on August 28, 2026 alleging monopolization under Sherman Act §2. The theory: Reddit's approximately $60M/year exclusive deal with Google -- which grants Google full robots.txt permissions while blocking all other crawlers including Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo, and SerpApi -- constitutes illegal selective access control. If those counterclaims had developed fully, they could have forced Reddit to equalize its robots.txt treatment, effectively unblocking Perplexity-User regardless of the primary case outcome. We flagged this as a third forward scenario in our October 3 investigation (Scout session 157).
**The antitrust discovery was stayed.** On October 2, 2026, Judge Engelmayer granted Reddit's motion to stay discovery on SerpApi's antitrust counterclaims while Reddit's motion to dismiss those claims is pending. We assessed this in our October 4 update (Scout session 158). The stay limits SerpApi's ability to build its antitrust case while the dismissal motion is considered. If Reddit wins the dismissal, the third scenario closes. We downgraded its probability from LOW-MEDIUM to LOW.
Three Scenarios for Perplexity Reddit Access
Based on our October 4 state of the case, the forward picture is three-way:
**Settlement with licensing (MEDIUM probability).** Perplexity pays Reddit for data access, similar to the OpenAI and Google licensing deals that preceded this lawsuit by months. Perplexity-User fetching gets formalized under contract. The citation rate would likely stabilize or recover. This outcome becomes more probable as discovery costs escalate on both sides.
**Adverse ruling or injunction (MEDIUM probability).** The SearchGuard DMCA framing survived dismissal and is now grounded in a 63-page opinion. If Reddit obtains an injunction against Perplexity-User's live fetching, the 47% citation rate collapses quickly -- the same structural collapse that wiped ChatGPT's Reddit citations in August after its fanout mechanism changed.
**SerpApi antitrust prevails (LOW probability, downgraded October 2).** The discovery stay significantly reduces SerpApi's ability to develop this case. We are no longer treating it as a meaningful near-term variable.
The honest read: two scenarios with opposite outcomes for Perplexity, both MEDIUM probability. That's not a forecasting gap -- it's an accurate description of a binary legal situation. The October 16 discovery close is the next external inflection point.
What Businesses Should Actually Do
Don't build a Perplexity Reddit strategy on legal proceedings you can't control. Perplexity-User is still active as of today and the 47% rate is real -- but it has a known shutdown mechanism one adverse ruling away.
The more durable investment is on signals you own. A complete Yelp listing now feeds ChatGPT directly via the July 2026 data partnership. Google Business Profile affects AI Mode. LocalBusiness schema with proper address and sameAs fields matters across every platform. None of those depend on a court outcome.
Google AI Mode is also worth tracking alongside Perplexity. Our August 23 spot test found 50 of 100 AI Mode responses citing Reddit -- comparable to Perplexity, but built on Google's own crawl infrastructure with no equivalent legal exposure. For the platforms where Reddit presence matters most right now, AI Mode is actually the more structurally stable bet.
Reddit presence that already exists -- city subreddit mentions, category community threads where your business comes up naturally -- is worth maintaining and building slowly. What we would not do is invest heavily in building a Reddit footprint specifically to capture Perplexity citations during a two-week discovery window when the October 16 deadline may restructure the entire picture.
A Signal Check on sourcepull.ca will show you where your actual visibility gaps are across all four AI platforms. Before investing in Reddit-specific strategy under legal uncertainty, it helps to know whether Perplexity is actually the platform gap costing you citations -- or whether the more actionable fixes are on signals that no lawsuit touches.
