Perplexity Won the AI Browser Race. Here's What It Means for Your Visibility.
The AI browser category has an outcome. On August 9, 2026, OpenAI shut down ChatGPT Atlas -- the Chromium-based browser it launched in October 2025 as a direct competitor to Perplexity's AI-native browser. Perplexity Comet is now the only standalone AI browser still running, and it has global reach across every major platform.
For local businesses trying to decide where to concentrate AI visibility work, this is worth understanding. Not because it requires new tactics -- it doesn't -- but because it changes the scale of what's already working.
What Happened This Summer
In our August 13, 2026 investigation (Scout session 106, `knowledge/platform-citation-behaviors.md`), we documented the Comet launch arc and the Atlas closure.
Perplexity Comet is a Chromium-based browser with Perplexity embedded as the default search engine. A persistent sidebar agent can browse pages, compare products, fill forms, and take action without leaving the browser. All browsing data stays on-device -- no telemetry for model retraining. The rollout ran from July 2025 (Perplexity Max subscribers), to October 2025 (open to all users), November 2025 (Android), March 2026 (iOS), and Q2 2026 (globally available on all platforms).
ChatGPT Atlas launched on macOS in October 2025 -- one month after Comet -- and shut down on August 9, 2026. OpenAI cited difficulty differentiating it from established browsers and mounting security concerns. Agentic browser capabilities are moving into the ChatGPT desktop app and a Chrome extension instead.
The outcome: Perplexity won the standalone AI browser category. ChatGPT chose integration over a dedicated browser product. These are now the two tracks the market settled on.
The Citation Infrastructure Is Identical
The key finding for any business thinking about what Comet means for their Perplexity strategy: nothing changes.
Our session 106 investigation confirmed that Comet uses Perplexity's standard answer-engine infrastructure. The same citation signals that govern Perplexity web apply to Comet citations. There is no separate Comet ranking layer, no Comet-specific schema type, and no additional steps to appear in Comet results.
What that means in practice: directory presence (Yelp, Angi, BBB, and niche directories for your category), content freshness (Perplexity's live RAG retrieval weights recent content -- the three-month content cliff applies), and format matching (Perplexity extracts from first sentences, named facts, and structured lists) are the signals that determine Comet citations. These are the same signals that determine Perplexity.ai citations.

The Reach Expanded Without Changing the Signals
The signals didn't change. The query volume did.
Every user who installs Comet as their primary browser routes their search-intent queries through Perplexity's infrastructure. That is a different kind of query than someone navigating to perplexity.ai from a tab. Browser-native AI search catches people mid-task: during a contractor lookup, a product comparison, a healthcare provider search. The intent level is high and the session is already active.
More queries through Perplexity infrastructure means more citation events. The businesses appearing in those citations capture more zero-click visibility, more brand impressions, and -- per our June 2026 platform-divergence investigation -- downstream branded search volume growth. The citation surface Perplexity optimization touches is now larger than it was before Comet went global.
For local service businesses, the most relevant surface is recommendation queries -- "best [category] near [city]" and hiring queries. These route through Perplexity's local citation layer, which pulls from directory presence and live retrieval. As Comet's install base expands, the value of having a complete, consistently optimized Perplexity footprint grows proportionally.
Why This Makes Perplexity the Right Priority Right Now
This is where the Comet/Atlas outcome matters most for fix plan sequencing.
Our June 2026 investigation (Scout session 52, `knowledge/perplexity-citation-triggers.md`) documented a platform divergence that has continued to widen. When GPT-5.5 launched in May 2026, brand-site citations on ChatGPT's free tier dropped by approximately 55%. On the ChatGPT free tier, third-party presence -- directory listings, review platforms, earned mentions -- is now effectively the only lever available. On-site schema, structured data, and content optimization have significantly weakened as ChatGPT-specific fixes for the majority of users who access ChatGPT on the free tier.
Perplexity did not experience this shift. GPT-5.5 was integrated into Perplexity only as a Computer orchestration model for deep research tasks -- it did not change Perplexity's core citation engine. On Perplexity, brand-site schema, content freshness, and directory presence all remain independent, active signals.
The session 52 finding was direct: "Perplexity is the platform where infrastructure fixes produce the fastest observable improvement. ChatGPT free tier: third-party presence is now the only lever. Perplexity: brand-site schema + fresh content + directory presence all still work." Comet's expanded reach adds weight to this conclusion -- not just because Perplexity is easier to move, but because moving it now reaches more users than it did six months ago.
What the Two-Bar Framework Tells You to Do First
The two-bar selection model from our session 52 investigation remains the correct operational framework for Perplexity and Comet.
**Bar 1 -- Source selection.** Perplexity must retrieve your page before it can cite you. For local service businesses, Bar 1 failure is the primary problem -- and Bar 1 is cleared through directory presence and Google organic ranking. A business not listed in the directories Perplexity retrieves for its category, and not ranking in Google's organic top 10 for the target category and city, will not appear in Perplexity's retrieval pool. That is true regardless of schema quality, site structure, or content depth.
A complete Yelp profile with active reviews -- combined with a Google organic ranking for the target category and city -- gives Perplexity something to retrieve. Without that, on-site fixes don't reach Bar 1.
**Bar 2 -- Answer absorption.** From the five to ten pages Perplexity retrieves, three to four are named in the synthesized answer. Bar 2 selection favors pages that open with a direct answer, contain specific named details (hours, prices, service categories, founding year, location), and can be quoted without rewriting. A Yelp listing with zero reviews provides Bar 1 access and nothing for Bar 2 extraction. A listing with 20 or more reviews and a populated "about" section gives Perplexity content to synthesize.
Comet expanded the reach of this framework without changing it. Directory presence first, content structure second. That sequence now delivers value across Perplexity web, Comet, and any surface Perplexity adds as it grows.
