Gemini Recommends 9x More Local Businesses Than ChatGPT
The next time someone describes AI search as a single channel -- fix your schema, get listed in Yelp, improve everywhere at once -- show them this table.
SOCi analyzed more than 350,000 business locations across 2,751 brands for their 2026 Local Visibility Index. They measured what percentage of those businesses actually appear in AI recommendations when a consumer asks a local intent query. The platform gap is sharper than most practitioners expect:
| Platform | Recommendation rate | |---|---| | Google local 3-Pack | 35.9% | | Gemini | 11% | | Perplexity | 7.4% | | ChatGPT | 1.2% |
Gemini recommends nine times as many local businesses as ChatGPT. Google's traditional local pack still surfaces 30 times more businesses than ChatGPT. We documented the complete SOCi dataset in our October 15, 2026 research update (session 169) -- it is the most direct published measurement of AI recommendation coverage across a large multi-brand location dataset.
Why Gemini's Number Is Nine Times Higher
This gap is not a data artifact. It reflects a structural difference in how Gemini retrieves local business information versus how ChatGPT does.
ChatGPT builds its local business knowledge from web pages, third-party directories, and training data. A business appears in ChatGPT answers only if it has sufficient web footprint in the indexed data -- Yelp and BBB profiles, backlinks, schema-marked service pages. The 1.2% recommendation rate is what that filter yields across 350,000 real locations. It is a demanding bar, and most businesses do not clear it.
Gemini is different. It has live access to Google Maps and Google Business Profile data through Google's own infrastructure. When a user asks who to call for a plumber near them, Gemini can surface businesses that are simply present in Maps with a functional GBP profile -- even if those businesses have thin web footprints by ChatGPT's standards.
The Steady Demand AI Citation Ledger gives this a concrete number. In our September 23, 2026 research filing (session 147), covering 14,472 citations across 50 US metros and 10 local service categories, Gemini sourced 59.9% of its local citations directly from business websites -- six times more than it pulled from any directory type. General and local-service directories combined accounted for roughly 20% of Gemini citations. Gemini is not waiting for you to appear in Angi or Thumbtack to consider you. It is reading your site and Maps entry directly.
The practical result: a business with a clean GBP profile and a functional website has a materially higher probability of appearing in Gemini answers than in ChatGPT answers, even if its broader web presence is thin.
These Two Platforms Do Not Recommend the Same Businesses
The 9x recommendation rate gap is only part of the picture. ChatGPT and Gemini also recommend almost entirely different sets of businesses.
The Steady Demand study tested identical local service queries on both platforms. Our session 147 filing documented their finding: ChatGPT and Gemini cited the same domains in only 8% of queries. If your business is in Gemini's 11%, there is roughly a 1-in-12 chance you are also in ChatGPT's 1.2%.
This is consistent with the broader cross-platform citation research published in 2026. A business visible on one platform is not automatically visible on another. AI platforms are not sourcing citations from a shared pool. Platform-specific optimization is not optional -- it is how these systems actually work.
The SOCi data adds a useful frame: only 45% of brands winning traditional local search also appear in AI recommendations for retail verticals. Strong Google Maps presence does not translate to AI recommendation. A business in the 3-Pack 35.9% is not in ChatGPT's 1.2% by default -- and even for Gemini at 11%, most Maps-visible businesses are still excluded.
What This Means for Your Fix Plan
The structural difference between platforms implies different entry points depending on which gap you need to close.
**For Gemini citation:** GBP completeness is the primary lever. Because Gemini has live Maps grounding, a business that is fully present in Google's local ecosystem -- complete GBP profile, accurate NAP, relevant service categories, recent reviews with replies -- is already in the source pool Gemini draws from. The SearchAtlas Citation Study (session 118, August 2026), covering 104,000+ citations across six AI platforms, found that replying to reviews correlated more strongly with Gemini citation position (+0.11) than raw review count (+0.10) did. Overall GBP completeness score had the strongest single GBP signal in the study.
Small adjustments to an existing Maps presence can move Gemini citation rate. For an independent contractor with a thin web footprint, this is the most accessible path into AI recommendations -- not building a directory spread or earning backlinks, but tightening up the infrastructure already embedded in Google's local ecosystem.
**For ChatGPT citation:** The path is different. Directory presence -- Yelp, BBB, Thumbtack, Angi, and industry-specific registries -- is the primary signal because ChatGPT is not pulling from Maps. SOCi found that businesses recommended by ChatGPT average 4.30+ stars (a meaningful difference from the 4.10 average for Perplexity-recommended businesses). The Insites AI Visibility Report 2026 (10,000 US businesses) found that AI-visible businesses had more than twice the website page count of AI-invisible ones. ChatGPT citation requires web infrastructure investment, not just a GBP cleanup.
The implication: a fix designed to improve Gemini coverage -- better GBP, replied reviews, website completeness -- will not automatically improve ChatGPT visibility. A fix designed to improve ChatGPT coverage -- directory spread, review volume at scale, broader web footprint -- will not automatically improve Gemini visibility. Both matter, and neither substitutes for the other.
The 35.9% Benchmark Is Worth Keeping in Mind
The Google 3-Pack number in the SOCi table is worth sitting with for a moment. At 35.9%, the traditional local pack is still the most inclusive local discovery surface by a wide margin. AI platforms are highly selective by comparison -- even Gemini at 11% excludes nine out of ten businesses.
This is the practical argument for treating AI search as a separate channel from local SEO. You can rank in Maps regularly and still be invisible on every AI platform that matters. The SOCi 45% traditional/AI overlap figure confirms this -- more than half of the businesses winning in traditional local search are absent from AI recommendations.
If you want to see your current recommendation rate on each platform -- broken down between ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini separately -- Signal Check gives you that view in a few minutes. The per-platform split matters because the right fix depends on where the gap actually is.
